SOURCE 2009 Survival Guide (Must Read)

If you are attending SOURCE this year, it is to your benefit and those around you that you read carefully the following. (download PDF)

Surviving Source 2009

Perhaps the single largest factor in surviving Source with ease and grace is attitude. In keeping with our theme of  “The Great Expression,” we are creating an atmosphere of abundance (the opposite of the Great Depression)  We are co-creating our own microcosm, our own reality. There are no spectators at the Source- we, the attendees ARE the event! If you were with us last year, and there were things you thought could be done better, by all means, please do it! Be the change you wish to see….Radical self-reliance, radical self-expression.

TICKETS

First and foremost, you need your ticket! If your ticket is being held at will-call, you will need a photo ID. Tickets will be available for purchase at the gate, day passes will also be available.

PARKING

There is limited parking at Keanae. Please carpool. We cannot stress this enough, PLEASE CARPOOL!

You can coordinate a ride and/or riders using the Craigslist rideshare forum. Vehicles with multiple riders may be given preferential parking.

RAIN GEAR!

It rains at Camp Keanae. Sometimes it rains and rains, for days and days. Last year we were graced with beautiful weather. This year, we are hoping for the best and planning for the worst. Ponchos, slickers, galoshes, umbrellas, plastic garbage bags, inflatable canoes…all of these are in order (well, maybe not the canoe)

waterproof your body

waterproof your feet

waterproof your art/creative contributions

waterproof your gear

waterproof your sleeping space

ACCOMODATIONS:

Keanae has a limited number of bunk spaces. There is also space for camping. Showers and toilets are available; bring your own towel and toiletries.

If you choose to bunk:

Bedding; Sleeping bags, pillows, blankets…Whatever will make you feel cozy in your dry but extra festive bunk bed. There are a limited amount of beds available, on a first come, first served basis. Ear plugs might be a consideration- not everyone will want to sleep when you do.

If you choose to camp:

Consider that there is a possibility that you will be camping for four days in the pouring rain. We recommend that you put your tarp INSIDE the tent. Put things that you want to stay dry in plastic bags. Use your rain fly, and consider using an additional tarp for extra protection. Place plastic bottles or tennis balls on top of rebar stakes- these can be a dangerous hazard, especially at night and when camping is crowded. Weather-proof and water-proof!

FOOD:

Source has a fabulous meal plan in store for you…see the “Food and Culinary Arts” section of our website for details. Unlike last year, we will only be serving two meals per day instead of  three. (there will be snacks, smoothies, and a soup wagon)  If you want to have three meals,  are a picky eater, have strict dietary needs that the kitchen cannot accommodate, or tend to need to snack often, we suggest that you bring your own food.

WATER:

Source has an ample supply of drinking water. We require that you bring your own water container.

PETS:

Absolutely NO PETS will be allowed at Source. NO EXCEPTIONS.

SMOKERS:

Smokers- please bring your own portable ashtray (e.g. an empty candy tin, or film canister).Cigarette smoking will only be permitted in designated areas. Remember, this is a “leave no trace” event, so if you pack in the smokes, pack out the butts!

PARTICIPATION

There are no spectators at Source- we, the attendees, ARE the event! We ask that you come with an open mind, and a positive attitude. YOUR CREATIVE FLAIR IS WELCOME!

The Theme is the GREAT EXPRESSION

Are you an artist? Contact art@sourcemaui.com, to arrange to participate in hanging your and others. Do not expect that you can drop off artwork. It is your responsibility to see that it is displayed and there are not guarantees that a space will be available. The earlier you are involved the better.

Would you or your organization like to host  a theme camp? To register,  contact Janna Woods, peleslc@yahoo.com. Do so right away to get on the site map and the schedule, deadline is Feb 13th.

Want to volunteer? Contact our volunteer coordinator, Andrea, at: pinkhoody@yahoo.com. Tell her your name, how you can be reached, and how you’d like to contribute.

Costumes are practically mandatory, and so, so encouraged. This is your opportunity to let your inner child come out and play… who do you want to be? What does the “free-est,” highest version of yourself dress like?

Art, drums, musical instruments, props, banners, signs, flags, decorative lighting, blink-ies, glow-ies and other things to decorate and light yourself, your space, and your friends add to the fun. Source is about radical self expression, so by all means, express yourself!

PROHIBITED ITEMS:

*In accordance with state and local law and the policy of the YMCA, all illegal drugs and alcohol are prohibited

*Fireworks or explosives of any kind.

*Charcoal grills (White Gas/Propane is ok)

*Weapons

*Bad and/or elitist attitudes

*Any pets

*Vending – any type of vending will NOT be tolerated

*MOOP (Matter Out Of Place)- Anything that will break up and/or blow away in the wind (confetti, loose paper, feathers, etc)

COMMON SENSE:

*Be respectful of those whose idea of radical self expression may not be as radical as yours. There will be children at this event, as well as a wide variety of people.

*Respect your fellow Sourcers and their stuff. Vandalism and thievery just suck, and are NOT part of the Source vibe. Treat folks the way you want to be treated…need we say more?

*Be sure to secure any loose items before leaving your camp. Camp Keanae is situated on land with cliffs overlooking the ocean. Please control your trash, especially cigarette butts, as everything that blows off the land stands a good chance of ending up deeply lodged in the stomach of one of our beloved green sea turtles.

*Be prepared to take care of yourself! Remember necessary medications, sunscreen, mosquito repellant- whatever your special needs may be. Drink plenty of water while at the event, and practice harm reduction.

YOU GOTTA HAVE:

-a water container

-a ticket

-appropriate clothing

-bedding

-a light of some kind

-a positive vibe

MAY WE SUGGEST YOU BRING:

*Gifts for giving to new friends

*Flashlight, headlamp, cool neon, anything else to light yourself and your way—the moon will be only a quarter full this year for SOURCE… and rechargeable batteries! (Disposable batteries are so 2003, you know?)

*Costumes (we know you won’t forget)! decorative lighting, lots of blinkies and other things to decorate and light yourself.

*Art, musical instruments, props, banners, signs, and anything else you can think of that might make the experience more fun for all

*Camping gear- especially if you want privacy! Make sure it’s waterproof. Tents and tarps need to be free-standing. Consider a few large garbage bags to protect your gear from your leaking tent and possible water flow coming in through the floor. A good idea is to set a tarp down as a groundcloth inside the tent

*Shade structures, umbrellas, parasols, sheets, canopy, tarps, tent, parachute; something to break the strong mid-day sun and/ or rain

*Plastic bottles or tennis balls to top and protect dangerous rebar stakes or other hazards

*Appropriate clothing: light clothes for during the day, warmer clothing for at night. Rain, gear, rain gear, rain gear

*A wide brim hat

*Raingear!! Again, this might include large garbage bags for the gear in your leaky tent

*An extra tarp

*Earplugs (if you’re a light sleeper)

*Watertight protective bags (e.g. heavy zip-type) for cameras or electronic gear

*Garbage bags – leave no trace!

*Any prescription medications, contact lens supplies (disposables work great), and whatever else you need to maintain your health and comfort in a remote area with no services

*Sunscreen lotion, lipbalm, sunhat and sunglasses

*Solid sandals or close-toed shoes and flip flops. Some spaces are shoe-free

*First aid kit

*Insect repellent

*Portable chairs

*Coolers full of your favorite libations (no alcohol)

SOURCE COULD USE AND WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR DONATIONS OF:

-Tarps. TARPS!

-Dishes for the kitchen

-Duct tape

-YOUR HELP! Contact the volunteer coordinator, we’ll put your efforts to good use: pinkhoody@yahoo.com

This year we REQUIRE that you bring your own water container, as well as a separate mug for coffee, tea, and hot beverages, if you prefer to use something different than your water container. Last year we had mugs disappearing from the kitchen left and right, so we can’t provide them again, and disposable dishes just suck! Please help support our efforts to support you, as well as be environmentally friendly. Bring your own mugs! Maybe even bring an extra for your friends.

  4. Aloha,
I live in Waianapanapa. I would really like to attend this years Source, however, I do not have the funds to support such an endeavor. I am a writer/artist. Is there any way I could volunteer for a free or reduced price ticket? Please let me know! Mahalo~

    Aloha Aja:

Thank you for your interest. I really hope you can make it.

We were just out at the Camp yesterday doing volunteer work– painting signs and building stairs.

As you can imagine, many of us are in the same boat as you– it’s not easy to come up with the funds these days. There are some other blog posts about this–
    http://sourcemaui.wordpress.com/2008/12/09/purchasing-presale-tickets/

We are doing our absolute best to keep the costs as low as possible. Last year the tickets were $150 and this year we have added an entire day and night to the event. SOURCE is an event that is grassroots– everyone is buying a ticket including me.

It’s like we get a few hundred friends together and all share equally the cost of the amazing location, amazing food, security, generator and all the other little stuff that costs money. We all bring a gift to share (like funkiness, craftiness, etc) and we all give that gift for free. Who knows how long it can last like that — but for now to me it’s a pretty great notion..

Thanks again for considering it… with 18 days left, you just need to make an extra 10 bucks a day!!! (sorry I kind of hate it when people do that, but it’s true)

    See out there!

P.S. consider other fund raising techniques– get a sponsor, sell raffle tickets, baked goods, ask for donations….

I was wondering, also, if there could be a list of things you already have, that you mite be able to provide people, maybe on a limited basis. Items like Snorkeling stuff, bikes, and heavier stuff (like tarps, but i see you suggest to bring and donate!), thank you and I look forward to meeting everyone!, I am a trombonist in a marching band from Chicago, EE, and another drummer from EE, Carlos, and i are gonna be there. PS, Mardis Gras, this year for us, Maui Gras, is February 24th. YAH!

Happy Valentines Day to My Sourcers,

The Source of Love is Truth.

My Truth is being utterly vulnerably real and authentic as the cosmic soul born into my human body to live my life and hold space on Earth in these moments called Time or Life.

What is Source? This year our theme is “The Great Expression.” I affirm that in 2009, the Maui Source Festival’s theme presents a unique opportunity for each and every one of us to share and affirm our unique Truth that makes up who we each are. We are individuals. We are earthlings. We are human; brilliantly complex creatures. We are each separated by our physical bodies… and yet, the source of our separation is only other types of energy holding space here on Earth with us.

Are we so separate that we do not see each other? No, in fact, we are blessed to be able to engage, interact and hold space together in an incredibly diverse array of choices. Let your mind consider for a moment the many ways in which humans interact with one another. Playing volleyball, building a skyscraper, throwing a party, making love, teaching a skill, playing a symphony… it seems humans have come up with a never-ending list of ways in which to engage one other through space and time on Earth.

    I celebrate this fact.

At Source Festival in Maui 2009, it is my intention to receive as much joy and pleasure as possible through interaction with my fellow Sourcers. You creatures with whom I share Maui and the rest of our breathtakingly beautiful planet, I love and enjoy all of you — and those passionately authentic folks who celebrate and share their Truth are my favorite. Source is one special place we like-minded folks (Sourcers) call home.

    Happy Source Festival 2009.

Set your intention before you arrive at Source next week — Decide how you hold space as a Sourcer in front of the eyes of our ‘Aina next weekend.

Na Maka o ka ‘Aina Voir Dire (The Eyes of the Land Speak the Truth)

    Love, Resonance & Affinity,
    Adelle

Hi and Thanks for The beautiful Guide to Source.

    I am bringing my tools.
So let me know if there are any emergent issues on the physical plane at Keanae, e.g. plumbing , Electrical, Logistics, etc. I am happy to assist.
I am bringing bubbles for days

Thank you source for existing and beings a nicely designed festival that it is. I went not knowing what to expect as I was hired to setup sound for the live acts and had just finished a week at camp Keanae with the Mystic Garden Party festival. I was happily surprised and delighted to find a whole new group of aware people with a fresh outlook and beautiful spaces. I found a tribe that I vibed with and had some inspired dances with the revelers in the woom room whenever I was not mixing the live bands. I found the people who organized and made it happen to be concientious and dedicated to making it the best festival happening on Maui! I’m glad to have been part of this crew!…Brooks
